1) Dead Poets Society
a) Why did you choose this clip?
I chose this clip because, other than the fact that I needed to have a video on teaching, I really enjoy the way Mr. Keating (Robin Williams) teaches his students to love poetry. He tells them that it's not based on what the text book says and makes the rip the page out. I think that definitely a bold move, however, he makes his point very clear. Poetry is something that comes from your heart, it's something you feel, it's art. It cannot be defined to what a teacher or professor, or text book says it is. Yes, there are many types and ways of writing poetry, but it should not be limited to that. Mr. Keating was very aware of that fact.
b) What is the context?
In this video, Mr. Keating is teaching his English class about poetry. It's a very strict private high school who's reputation holds fast to the honour of education and the academic success of their pupils. Mr. Keating is very liberal in his ways of teaching because he wants the students to love and expand their knowledge of poetry and the English language. For a textbook to compartmentalize and 'put in a box' what Mr. Keating loves so much is an insult.
c) Does this clip offer an example of exceptionally good or problematic teaching?
I think that this clip offers an example of exceptionally good teaching. The reason I say this is because the students were able to learn something as basic as English and turn in into something they were passionate about. Later on in the movie, the students learn to love poetry and write as a hobby. Also, they discover who they are using poetry and art. Mr. Keating taught them to expand their minds to more than what the textbook teaches and encourages using what you have (i.e, expand your vocabulary because there are so many ways to describe feelings without being boring and basic. For example, use morose instead of 'very sad').
2) School of Rock
a) Why did you choose this clip?
I chose this clip because, to be honest, I think it's hilarious. I also think that in a way Dewey Finn is an inspirational character. He's funny, but he doesn't know where the limit is. He has a passion for rock music and gets upset when the students have no idea what he's talking about when he mentions Led Zepplin, AC/DC, Sabbath, etc. But his willingnes and patience in teaching them to love it just as much, or close enough, as he does is what makes him great.
b) What is the context?
So, the context of this clip is that Dewey Finn was kicked out of his rock band and poses as a substitute teacher at a private elementary school. There he tries to create his own rock band by teaching the students rock and how to play rock using the instruments they already know instead of actual school subjects.
c) Does this clip offer an example of exceptionally good or problematic teaching?
I think that this clip offers an example of, I'm on the fence, good and bad teaching. The reason I say this is he teaches the student to love what they're doing musically. However, basic things are needed in the classroom. For example, when a student asked when they would learn math, Dewey answers saying it is unimportant. He completely discards the curriculum and what those students are supposed to know academically and focuses entirely on rock.
